The most obvious is that Free licences cannot share Reports or Dashboards with other users, neither can they view Reports or Dashboards shared from other Pro licence users. Power BI Free LimitationsĪlthough powerful, the Power BI free licence has several limitations. These reports can be refreshed up to 8 times a day, with a minimum of 30 minutes between each refresh. The maximum size of a Power BI report that can be hosted in the cloud is 1GB. A Power BI Free licence gives the user 10GB of storage in the cloud that can be used for hosting Power BI reports, or Excel workbooks. Users can sign up for one simply by registering here. The Power BI Free licence is the entry-level licence for Power BI. To access Power BI in the cloud you’ll need a licence, either Free or Pro. However, once you’ve built your Report, in order to share it with others, export it to PowerPoint or simply print the Report you’ll need a Power BI account in the cloud. There is another tool with almost the same name as Power BI Desktop but called as Power BI Desktop Report Server. Power BI Desktop Report Server is Different You can open a file created with any of these, using the other one (as long as they are both up-to-date). There will be no difference in the Power BI file (*.PBIX file) that is created using any of these methods. You can build exactly the same report using any of these two methods. In terms of building the report, there is no difference between the two versions (if we consider that both versions are up-to-date).

Another scenario is that for some reason, someone might want to use an older version of Power BI Desktop for their report development work. For some versions, you can only use the download link. One of the problems of the Microsoft Store version of Power BI Desktop is that it is not available for all versions of Windows. So if you want to be always on the edge of updates and enjoy the fascinating new features announced every month, considering getting the Power BI Desktop from the Microsoft Store. Power BI team updates the Power BI Desktop tool every month, and keeping that manually up-to-date is a big hassle.
